June (Part 5) Siti Nur Suzuki!

As time passes by, I realized I needed a transport to move around. School is far away, someone is far away, everything is far away. And adult public transport fares were killing me. I was topping up $20 every 2 days or so. Crazy. My family had a car, but everyone in the family has a driver's licence, so chances of being able to use it was slim.

And so, 2 years ago I enrolled for a motorbike licence, and Alhamdulillah, I passed =) Not without much reluctance from my mom to give her blessings though. Anyway, my dad was willing to sponsor my first bike, just like how he sponsored Beg Mal's. It was going to be a birthday present for me from him! As long as the priority was to use it for convenience to go to school and other beneficial uses, he gave his blessings. So what bike did I choose?

As a student, I had to factor in economy. Sure in the long run motorbike saves me money, but there was still the petrol, bike upkeep and maintenance, road tax, COE, parking and insurance costs all to factor in. I was leaning heavily towards the Yamaha Spark for its excellent fuel efficiency, until Beg Mal suggested a model of scrambler which was also very economical in petrol. And so, after doing much online research, I decided on the Suzuki DR 200SE, a well-known workhorse, rugged with a bulletproof engine, minimal maintenance, and fuel-efficient 4-stroke dual-sport scrambler with the maximum engine displacement my licence allows me to ride (2oocc) ensuring I also have good power. The plus point was that as I was buying a scrambler, I could also have off-road fun at hand! That's why it's designed as a dual-sport scrambler, designed to be street-legal and for urban riding, as well as capable of handling trails and off-road excursions. As it turns out, it was Beg Mal's first bike too! He had excellent experiences with it, despite it being an older model and in run-down fashion when he got it, and that's why he recommended it. And so, I became the proud possessor of Siti Nur Suzuki! (Yeah that's what I named her). Fortunately, the particular bike I bought, the first owner had already done up the cosmetic changes that I planned to make to the bike, thus saving me some money. The stock bike is brutally ugly in my opinion.

GEMINI MAN

June (Part 3) My 24th Birthday!

Happy Birthday to me! As always, I've made up all kinds of excuses to other people so that I could keep this day free for me to be with someone =) Nothing beats spending time with the one you love. And what a day I had too! Someone brought me to eat for the first time at Manhattan Fish Market at Marina Square, an upmarket eatery right next to the Seoul Garden which I brought HER for her 21st birthday! Again, another first for the both of us. She's taken so many of my virginities (figuratively speaking... not literally), its got to be some kind of personal record! We spent the rest of the evening walking around, exploring the yet-to-be-fully-opened-Double Helix Bridge, visited Marina Bay Sands, and sat the Fountain of Youth (is that what it's called?) at Suntec City, where she surprised me and presented me with my present... a customized red hoodie, just what I've always been looking for! =)=)=) I love the gift and really appreciate the effort she put into adding her personal touch on the hoodie... having my name on it, in cartoonish blocks, complete with a teddy bear! Its just a pity the bear was wearing a football jersey with no 8 on it instead of my favourite no 7. Haha. Thanks dear. Your company really made for a wonderful birthday to remember. Love the gift, but most importantly, love the person =)

It's finally happened: The Clan has its first official married member!

Khairul married his sweetheart since Junior College, M, and in the process, they became the First Couple of The Clan. As one of the longest, if not THE longest-lasting relationships in the Clan, it was apt and not unexpected, seeing that Khai remains the only Clan member not to have hit a ''snag'' in his academic life. As this was a very special occasion for us Clanners, we had high expectations of ourselves as the 'orang kuat' (strongmen) on Khai's behalf. Therefore the wheels of planning were set in motion...

June 1.

And so the Big Day has arrived. No, not my wedding day, but the day my family were to shift out of our Tampines home, for good. Inevitably, I feel a little sad and nostalgic, as staying in Tampines was all that I've ever known, though I was born while we were still based at West Coast. I spent about 8-9 years at my Avenue 5 flat, and the house I was leaving now, I had been living in since I was 10, a good 14-year-period. All the hard work we've done in preparing to move out culminated in the actions done today. We had been slowly transferring essential furniture like the beds bit-by-bit to my sister's house, while the rest of the major household stuffs meant for our under-construction Nusa Idaman house are to be transferred to our rented condo in Johor, which serves partly as a storage area and partly as an alternate home. After shifting our possessions out, my parents handed over the house keys to the new owners to signal a new chapter in our collective lives.

Stressful times for me now. School was well and truly in high gear, and I was working in overdrive mode, clocking up late nights and studying and doing assignments. I wanted to ace every module I took, the minimum I set for myself is a Distinction, but I was actually really gunning for High Distinction. At the same time, someone's birthday was drawing closer and closer, and I was feverishly rushing through my assignment because it was someone's 21st birthday and I desperately did not want to disappoint her by not spending time with her on her special day. My own 21st birthday was spent in an army camp, and I recognized how important it was to her. So at the same time that I was stressing myself trying to meet my assignment deadline, I had to endure a whiny, complainey someone who's upset that there was a very serious possibility of us not spending her special day together. Haha. But, knowing that she was upset to the point of tears provided me with just the motivation I needed to spur on and complete my assignment in time, which I did. I had to sacrifice my entire night's sleep, but for her, it's worth it =)

On someone's special day, I barely managed to complete and print my assignments and also print a certain document which I presented to someone, along with a pretty present which she had greatly desired =) Although we didn't manage to spend much time together for I had a last-minute make-up class to attend and submit my assignment, we still managed to spend a good few hours together having dinner at Seoul Garden Marina Square. First, I handed over to her a ''document" (the content's TOP SECRET), and then the actual present, packed neatly in a custom pizza box I sourced in order to fit it in without letting her have a clue as to its contents. Alhamdulillah, despite unforeseen circumstances nearly threatening to derail our plans, and although we only managed to spend a few hours together, it was a quality few hours, and I hope someone loves the gifts and time spent with me as much as I did with her =)

To add to the happiness, I received good news that I had scored double High Distinctions for both my modules! Alhamdulillah =)

May (Part 2) Beg Mal's Engagement

Remember in the last entry I mentioned I had to leave VSC early because of some family business? Well, this was it! My family were to send representatives over to his girl's home to seek her hand in engagement, or masuk meminang. Rushing home, my core body temperature still high from the exertion of football, I had to quickly spruce myself up. Traditionally, only the representatives were sent over, but since her family had requested that our entire family graced the occasion including Beg Mal, we complied. As always, for an engagement ceremony, our family preferred to keep it low-key and not make it big like a wedding ceremony. Typically, engagement 'binds' the girl to the man from anywhere between a period of 1 year to several years, but since the wedding ceremony is scheduled for February next year Insya'Allah, this engagement is only for a few months. And as it turns out, the girl is only 2 years older than me, and was from TKGS too! My first sister-in-law was a former TKGian. My potential sister-in-law is another TKGian. Will my future partner be a TKGian too? I hope not, because I already have a perfect partner who isn't, and I wouldn't want it any way different =)

May (Part 1) Victoria Soccer Challenge 2010

9VSC 2010 was held in May. As usual, we didn't need prompting to send in a team of our own. Under the banner of Victoria School Old Boys (VSOB... NOT VSOP ehhh), we formed a team of 10 players, mostly Victorians. However, since the VSC rules allowed for 3 guest players, we roped in some TKH players just like last year, and hence our team was complete. I had to leave before the entire one-day tournament was over because I had to rush back for family business, and ended up playing only 3 games I think, in which I scored 1 goal and made 1 assist. This year we again managed to get 3rd place! Not a bad achievement, considering the formidable level of teams present. That's two years in a row we got 3rd. If there's a VSC 2011, 1st/2nd place here we come! Insya'Allah.

It's confirmed: Our Tampines house is to be sold, and the house in Malaysia to be purchased. The arrangement is this: While we wait for construction/renovation of our Malaysian house to complete, my parents, Beg Mal and me are to shift in with my sister's family. This means that I'll be based in Pasir Ris for more or less 2 years. But even then, despite shifting to Malaysia, I'll be spending most of my time in Singapore anyway. I'll be schooling here and probably working too. Instead of journeying from East to Central, I'll be coming from West to Central, as my Malaysia house is a 15 mins' straight road from Second Link (and from there, about 10 mins to someone's house. Getting even nearer... and closer =) Heh) I'll probably leave Malaysia early morning, and re-enter only at night. And if I'm too tired to go back at night, I could always crash Kak Husna's and Beg Fan's house. Okie doke. Time to start packing up our stuffs. Major work is in order.

A first!

Someone was having her recess week (read: must take advantage!) and so I chope-d her on one of those days for a date. We planned to go visit The Pinnacle@Duxton, a high-rise private residence with Sky Gardens open to public access at the 50th floor. With it being right smack in the middle of town, the views offered on the Sky Garden were simply spectacular! With the winds that blow through your hair, against a backdrop of the city skyline at night, it was stunning, surreal, and relaxing all at once. Simply beautiful. Just like the company I was with. Heheh. However, that was in the evening. Prior to that, me and someone watched the stunning Alice in Wonderland (in 3D!), after which we had a meal at Far East Plaza before making our way to Pinnacle@Duxton. Really enjoyed this date, which was a long time coming. Long may we continue to have these kinda outings =)

It's a priceless occassion to meet and catch up with some of our rarely-seen cousins, such as Kak Nurul, who's shifted to Chua Chu Kang to live with her husband. Also, it was an occasion held to surprise Kak Muni and her husband Abang Taufique, but for what reason, I forgot. Meh. Thank God we as cousins still remain close, and Insya'Allah it will forever remain this way. Now if only our cousins from Brunei could have joined us too =(

February (Part 2)

Had the first real test of my (unofficial) relationship with someone. It was a really confusing time for me, and what actually led to it I can't recall exactly, but it involved a particularly heated argument over the course of 2 weeks, which led me to do some serious soul-searching. However, as much as I was upset with someone at that point in time, the truth was that I love her very much and felt very disturbed. I çouldn't bear seeing the anguish suffered by her during the 1-week period I requested some time off to organize my thoughts. So when she fell sick during that period, I decided to spring a surprise on her by coming over to her place bearing some goodies to cheer her up and lift her morale a bit. Alhamdulillah, all's well that ends well, as I ended the tension of uncertainty by breaking the positive news after dinner together at East Coast Park hawker centre.

I hope never to have to make someone go through that again nor be the one left hanging, waiting and hoping for good news. It is something I much regret =(

And since my dad qualified for Senior Citizen class, he got free tickets (or something... my memory's fuzzy) too. Only I had to pay for my tix... but since Kak Husna wanted to pay for me, I wasn't complaining! All in all, a fun day out for the family =)

Cousin Abang Awel (Shahril) FINALLY's gotten married after mem-bujang for so long. It's about time too, for hopefully he'll be the first that sparks the rest of the similar-aged 30-somethings bujang2 cousins to get married also. First Entry of 2010

Apologies to readers of my blog.

I know it's about due time I updated this blog, yet a combination of procrastination and a general lack of desire to blog has led to me post my first entry of 2010 only now, halfway through the middle of October. And now, as I'm wide awake at 2:36 am in the morning, the TV showing Real Madrid vs AC Milan, but me not really watching as I reflect on recent events in my life, suddenly i felt the sudden urge to pour out my thoughts and feelings on my blog again. If there's even anyone interested in reading my blog, bear with me as I try to recollect and organize my thoughts...

It's been a roller-coaster year of incredible ups and downs for me so far, with many firsts and also hopefully, a few lasts. I'll list them as I remember them, and hopefully that will suffice for the lack of entries so far. Watch this space.

First trip out for the year-end holidays with family. This time around it's real meaningful, because the whole family went, and that's something that was nigh-impossible for the past few years, due to clashes in leave availability, and my NS status. Still, even then, my sister couldn't join us this year, because Abang Hisyam's leave clashed with our family's trip, so they went on a separate holiday with Abang Hisyam's parents.

SITEX 2009 and Introducing Acer Aspire 4937!

Ayah has sanctioned my to request to purchase a laptop due to school work, but he said if I could wait, Beg Fan wants to bring me to SITEX 2009, a computer exhibition show, where we can get cheap deals. Of course, I would never buy a laptop without deferring to Beg Fan, that's his area of expertise. Likewise, looking for motorbike-related stuffs? Refer to Beg Mal! Looking for advice on football equipment? Refer to Me! Hah. Anyway.

Today is the first day of SITEX 2009. Beg Fan's tip is that we either go on the first or the last day, that's where the deals are. My budget (or rather, Ayah's budget) was below $1K, so I had to squeeze whatever I could within that budget. Armed with a copy of The Straits Times, I read aloud the technical specifications of various laptop models as Beg Fan drove there, and he was keen on checking out the MSI and Asus booths, while I was getting lost in a sea of technical jibby-jabby-speak. Heck, I don't even know the difference between a netbook and a notebook! Beg Fan was getting exasperated explaining to me the pros and cons of various hardware devices. Meh.

Anyway, to cut the story short, the Acer booth caught our eye for one of the best deals we've found. However, there were several Acer booths selling the same model, the Acer Aspire 4937-653G32Mn. One booth was giving away more freebies, while Harvey-Norman offered cheaper 3-year warranty. In the end , we went with Harvey-Norman's Acer booth... we decided that the warranty was more important than mere freebies, which would be rather cheap anyway, and besides, we had referred to the same salesgirl several times as we cross-referred with the other booths, and we had raised her hopes. So off I go then... $899 + additional $92 = $991 for another 2 years of warranty, taking the total warranty years to 3.

Of course, I wasn't gonna purchase the laptop without haggling for some freebies. And this is where Beg Fan the Pro was in his element. He made it blatantly clear to the salesgirl that he was about to make his decision, and the only thing that would sway his decision were the 'sweeteners' they could offer. So after talking to her boss, the girl offered us a set of Sensonic headphones, external Sensonic Speakers, an optical Sensonic Mouse, laptop bag, and a Genius cooling fan, along with the Norman Security Suite Antivirus CD which was a standard free gift. Not bad, not bad at all.

In fact... I could have pursued for another free gift, a rather expensive one I might add, an external 230GB hard-disk! When settling the paperwork, the salesgirl had accidentally written down the hard-disk as part of our freebies, and since it was in black-and-white, and I had already signed the forms, technically I'm entitled to that item. However, the salesgirl apologized profusely, and Beg Fan and me decided to let it go, as she looked a little young, it was an honest mistake, and she'd probably get f*cked by her boss and made to cover the cost of that item out of her own pay, which I guessed wasn't very much.

True enough, after the purchase, I took time out to talk to the girl. Turns out she was a 17-year old poly student who was working part-time at the event, and her commission per sale was a pitiful $5, on top of her hourly pay. I'm glad I didn't pursue the matter though, or else she'll be working at a loss =( My conscience is clear. Now, had that been a full-time salesperson though...

Of course after buying this, I asked, urged, and pestered Someone to go pay SITEX a visit to get her laptop there. And Someone DID get a laptop there too!

As I was returning home from cousin Shahmi's house having confirmed and concluded the deal for our lil weekend getaway to Malaysia next month, I spotted a sign on an anonymous shop's glass panel saying ''adidas Shoes for $60!"'

Now that's cheap for some adidas shoes, however I was quite satisfied with the shoes I had and wasn't planning to buy any. Besides, I wasn't really expecting much because for that price, I was maybe expecting some old/unpopular models up for clearance sale.

However to my utter shock, there spread on against the door panel was a collection of adidas shoes and football boots which range from the expected low-end range to the top-of-the-line models! AND ALL GOING FOR A UNIFORM PRICE OF $60 BUCKS!!! Inclusive of kids sizes, bottom-end models, and the high-end ones. NUTTERS!

Amongst the models sold are mid-range adidas Telstar boots, the low-end Absolados, and also the high-end adiPures, Predators and TUNITS!!!

I was really torn between the Predators and TUNITS because I've owned a mid-range Predator Manic before and really loved it, but my game is based on dribbling and speed so I need a pair of really light boots which the TUNITS provide. East Shore Hospital Baby Show... 'Aqil got 2nd!!! =)

My sis got a letter from East Shore Hospital (where 'Aqil was born) inviting all alumni of ESH to participate in a Baby Show... and of course, my sis enrolled Tonet in it! So many babies turned up in so many flamboyant costumes... and judging by how their parents dress it seems they think they're in the contest as well!

But at the end of the day, it became apparent to us that the flamboyant costumes couldn't match the traditional dress, as most of the winners were dressed in their traditional racial costumes~!

There were 2 Categories, Cat A for babies between 6-12 months old, and Cat B is for babies between 12-18 months old. 'Aqil belongs to Cat B.

A Reconnaisance Mission to Malaysia on Beg Mal's Birthday!

With Singapore's cost of living prohibitively expensive and still rising, my parents have decided that a move up north to Malaysia was probably a better option for their retirement plans, where Singapore's dollar is twice that the value of Malaysia's ringgit, which means more bang for the buck. This means that for the price of my current house, we could not only get a landed property in Malaysia, but also with sizeable land area on which the kids could run around freely too. Not only is it cheaper in Malaysia for us Singaporeans, the pace of life is rather less frantic and frenetic than the rat race that is Singapore's economy too. Though the plans to purchase property in Malaysia has been in the offing for quite a few years, its only possible now, due to my siblings now being all adults and relatively settled. So my entire family travelled up to Malaysia to scout for our potential home...

October is bankrupt-month for me, due to so many family members celebrating their birthdays within such a short span of time. So we decided to celebrate it all in one go, by spending the day out with the family having a lunch buffet at Sakura's (sushi!!!), relaxing at Changi Beach, before the day built up to a climax at Kak Husna's Pasir Ris house at night... where the family was divided by war... amidst the pizzas and other goodies served, there was bad blood to be had, as family members took sides for the crunch football match between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur...!!

On the Arsenal side, there's my dad, eldest bro Beg Fan, and BIL Abang Hisyam...
Waving the flag for the Spurs were my 2nd bro Beg Mal, and Kak Syai's husband Abang Herman...

Of course, me being the lone Manchester United fan in the family, I was decidedly neutral...

...and if any of them tried to claim bagging rights, I just shut them up by showing them the golden patch on my jersey sleeves indicating that WE ARE THE REIGNING CHAMPIONS, as opposed to the rest of the league, who merely sport a silver patch... Heh.
