Finally I have found a source which explains the nature and society of the creatures known as Djinn which best matches the description of them as I have learnt them to be. May this information be shared for our general knowledge and awareness of this unseen makhluk of Allah, and may the owner of the blog where I copied-and-pasted this from excuse my plagiarism, in the name of knowledge.
Wallahu'alam bissawab.

The Koran and references of the Prophet's Sayings have no mentions of Ghost. And in Islamic teaching, once a person is dead, he (his soul) has entered into a different world (Alam Barzakh) and they do not return to the mortal world, much less to haunt the living.
But it is compulsory for Muslims to believe that God has created other beings apart from Man. Celestial beings such as Angels and Djinns have been created long before Adam. It is no surprise that the Koran and Prophet sayings made many references to these beings. In fact, there is a dedicated chapter on Djinns (28 verses in the Sura Jinn) and Prophet Mohammad is also sent to preach Islam to the Djinns (not just to his Ummah or People/Man). After all, believe in the celestial beings (beings made from the sources of Light and Fire) are made obvious in the 6 fundamentals of Islamic faith (Rukun Iman).
It was also said that Jinns have occupied the earth and roamed its space 2,000 years before Man descended on it with Adam and Eve as its first couple. And it was also said that among the three different types of Djinns, one of its Kind (who lives in water and on land) is given the ability by God to take in any form other than their original element of Fire.
This is where we got ourselves mislead into the beliefs of ghost. Ghosts, are essentially the pyhsical manifestations of Djinns that are destructive in nature. I need to qualify what I have just said because Muslim are to believe that in the kingdom of Djinns, they have similar social institutions and governance like how Man live his life on earth. There are male and female Djinns with needs that mirrored us ie food, marriage, education, warfare etc. And as such, they too are free to choose their own faith - there are Christian Djiins, Hindus, Taoists, those that follow Buddha's teachings, those that are atheist or communists and those who are Muslims.
Verse 11 of Sura Jinn - There are among us Some that are righteous; And Some the contrary. We follow different paths.
Why the focus on Djinns when the topic is on the question of the existence of ghost? To answer that, Muslims are required to believe that Ghost are Djinns when they appear before human naked eye (God has granted their wish before Time, that they can see Man but Man will not be able to see them unless in special circumstances where they wish to or when God gave his chosen ones the ability to do so. However the situation will be the reverse in the Life Hereafter). As such the concept of lost souls and the dead coming back to haunt the living goes against the grain of Islamic teachings where Man is for Earth and Roh (or Soul) for Barzakh (Temporary World of the Dead) before reaching Man's final destination - Akhirat (Eternal World where all will be judged and given the just rewards or punishments).
When God created Man, all celestial beings were commanded to kneel before Adam as a sign of respect for God's creation and wisdom. All but Iblis (Devil or Lucifer) decided not to, with arrogance. The result of which, the Devil was ousted from his heavenly domain as a fallen angel on Earth. As Iblis is of the Djinn's race, his marriage with female Djinns created the offsprings we called Satans (which form the Devil's core army to deceive Mankind and to rob him of his faith in God). But by this history, the point to note is that Man has been created to be superior than the Djinns (for as long as Man keep his path of the Truth).
But alas, lack of knowledge and faith made Man fearful of the dark, of the unseen or seen (Djinns in visible forms that we traditionally and commonly refer to as Ghost). If only Man keeps their faith where it rightly belongs, the reverse is true for Djinns are a creation meant to accept Man's leadership or caliphate on Earth.
Their manifestation which brought fear unto Man became their favourite tool in manipulating Man's strengths and weaknesses. They appear like one's dead loved ones, or as an ugly terrifying creature or as voices, or dark shadows etc etc in the hope that Man can be intimidated and be deceived into fearing other than God.
Having said that, it is not my intention to wake the human senses so that he or she can wage a courageous war with the Djinns for their powers are not to be underestimated. Humans have a lifespan of below hundred wheres Djinns reached puberty when they have lived for about 500 years. Djinns have been known to live up to 3,000 years and those that were raised as Satans will live immortally live Doomsday. So we are dealing with beings that have centuries old of wisdom. They have managed, helped, tricked, deceive, or guide our forefathers many generations before us. So sound knowledge and faith is required when one intends to seek, command or simply have a dialogue with a Djinn. They are a race not meant for man to command (though that authority was exceptionally bestowed to Prophet Solomon the Wise who commanded Man, Animals and Djinns during his reign). And any attempts to do so usually ends in Man being controlled by the will of the Djinn.
So why still the strong belief in Ghost? Lack of knowledge in matters of the Faith is one reason. Customs is another - it is just so convenient to refer to the complex manner of Djinns by just referring to them as Ghost - a term which is universally accepted in almost all cultures East and West.
It is amazing how Muslims recite Sura An-Naas so often (daily) and yet still be deceived by the concept of Ghost and to remain ignorant of the deceitful ways of Satan-commanded Djinns.
In Sura An-Naas (6 verses) it says:
Say: I seek refuge with the Lord and Cherisher of Mankind. The King (or Ruler) of Mankind. The Judge of Mankind. From the mischief of the Whisperer (of Evil), who withdraws (after his whisper) - (The same) who whisper into the hearts of Mankind, - Among Djinns and among men.
The study of Djinns (remember, it is not Ghost, and any further reference to it would only be meant for universality of calling and convenience) is a limited one. We can learn so much and we need to accept that much more cannot be learnt. As the Koran has indicated in Sura Jinn, verse 26:
He alone knows the Unseen. Nor does He make anyone acquainted with His mysteries.
